Ko wai mātou | About Us

Nau mai, haere mai ki Te Kura

At Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura), our ākonga are always at the centre of what we do. For more than a century, we've supported learners across Aotearoa — evolving from lessons once delivered on horseback to today's future focused learning that can be done anywhere, anytime.

Ākonga at Te Kura choose subjects based on their passions and interests, accessing learning online supported by kaiako who guide, inspire, and drive engagement. Alongside this, kaiako provide pastoral care and connect with ākonga through regular huinga ako — online or face to face — where learners connect, receive guidance, and strengthen their sense of belonging.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this position:

We are seeking a Kaiāwhina who will walk alongside ākonga, helping them navigate their learning journey with confidence. Through both online and kanohi ki te kanohi engagement, you're there to guide, encourage, and uplift — ensuring every ākonga feels seen, heard, and valued.

In this role, you'll work closely with regional kaimahi to support and help ākonga engage with their learning, plan their next steps, and access opportunities that enrich their experience. You'll also foster a sense of belonging, offering mentorship and cultural support that strengthens identity and builds resilience.

As a Kaiāwhina you will

  • Empower ākonga to access and succeed in their learning — online and in person — by helping them plan, set goals, and take confident steps forward.
  • Collaborate with kaimahi across the region to identify ākonga who may need extra support, and guide them into meaningful learning and external experiences.
  • Champion inclusion and wellbeing, offering emotional and cultural support as a trusted adult and mentor in both individual and group settings.

For this position, we offer a salary range starting from $62,947 to a maximum of $76,433 pro rata per annum. The final salary offer will be determined based on the candidate's unique combination of skills, qualifications, and relevant experience.

Ko koe tēnei | About you

We're looking for someone who:

  • Connects easily with ākonga and builds strong, trusting relationships.
  • Encourages ākonga to take part in learning and feel good about their progress.
  • Helps ākonga make learning plans and find their way around Te Kura's systems.
  • Understands and respects each learner's culture, language, and identity.
  • Follows health and safety rules when working with ākonga outside the classroom.
  • Has knowledge of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga — or is keen to learn

Ngā Uara o Te Kura | Our Values

At Te Kura, we live by our values:

  • Manaaki — showing respect, generosity, and care
  • Whanaungatanga — building relationships and belonging
  • Tika — acting fairly and honestly
  • Ākonga at the Centre — guiding every decision we make

Hei whakautu | In return

You'll join a supportive, inclusive team where manaaki and whanaungatanga guide how we work. We offer flexible working options, professional growth opportunities, and the chance to make a meaningful difference for ākonga across Aotearoa
