Step into a fast-paced role where your mahi matters every single day. This is an important role that requires strong fluency in te reo Māori, tikanga, and Tāmaki Makaurau. Ultimately, you will oversee the office of the MP for Tāmaki Makaurau, including managing constituency matters, event management, and supporting the MP with key engagements.
The role of Pou Hāpai – MP Tāmaki Makaurau is important. It is a new role that will require helping a very small team establish a strong foundation for the office of the MP across the Māori electorate of Tāmaki Makaurau.
You will already have an established network that includes key stakeholders – mana whenua, mātāwaka, NGOs, non-profits, government agencies, and funding bodies – to name a few. Your attention to detail complements your innate ability to progress work under pressure, to tight timelines and limited resources, but with warmth, care, and respect.
This mahi is intense, but it is totally rewarding. Helping whānau in need, supporting rangatahi into work, protecting te taiao, and protecting Māori rights matters, and is instrumental to the future of all mokopuna of Aotearoa.
As Pou Hāpai – MP Tāmaki Makaurau you will lead all constituency matters. This is a front-facing role, where you will be expected to put people and kaupapa first. You will also help to build, strengthen, and maintain relationships between the MP Oriini Kaipara and key stakeholders across Tāmaki Makaurau. Further, you will uphold the Tikanga and Kawa of the Office of the MP for Tāmaki Makaurau, at all times.
Your mahi will involve community engagement, whakawhanaungatanga, case management, and supporting whānau to navigate government systems in ways that protect mana, reflect tikanga, and deliver real outcomes.
The office is based in Ōtāhuhu.
About the role | Mō te tūranga
Community Engagement
- Identify and setup events or opportunities for the MP to engage with constituents, key stakeholders, and partners that align with the MPs priorities and policies.
- Develop and manage the Tāmaki Makaurau Stakeholders Register. Network with key groups and stakeholders that align with the MP’s work and priorities, where possible.
- Attend kaupapa, events, engagements with the MP, in a supportive role (tikanga, admin, scheduling). From time to time, where the MP cannot attend an event and has agreed, the Pou Hāpai – MP Tāmaki Makaurau will act as the MP’s representative.
- Lead Tikanga by way of Karanga, Waiata, Mihimihi (wahine/female) or Waerea, Whaikōrero, Mihimihi, Haka tautoko (tāne/male).
- Stay connected to local issues and opportunities and communicate these to the MP regularly.
Constituent Services
- Meet with constituents and whānau and support them across a range of needs; advocate on their behalf with agencies such as Work and Income or Immigration New Zealand; explain processes and options in clear, respectful, and accessible language; manage constituent clinics; and maintain organised records and case files with care and discretion.
This role requires political neutrality, fluency in Māori and of te ao Māori, and the highest discretion. The pay band for the role starts at $74,240. Successful applications will be weighted on skills, experience, and alignment to the MP and the kaupapa of Te Pāti Māori. Please note, the full salary range extends beyond this to allow for tenure progression.

- Fluent in te reo me ōna tikanga, a firm practitioner of Tikanga, and an agent of Manaakitanga.
- Strong relationship-building and communication skills, with a genuine commitment to whānau, tangata tiriti and whanaungatanga.
- Ability to work independently, respond to fast-changing situations, and hold sound judgement, tact, and discretion.
- Awareness of community issues in Tāmaki and the ability to support people in ways that uphold mana and create positive outcomes.
