Contract type: Full time

Permanent - Full-time

There’s a lot changing in the electricity industry, and we’re seeing more generation and new technology connecting to our network.

We’re looking for a Generation & Transmission Integration Engineer to help us work through what that means for the network and make sure new connections can be integrated safely and efficiently.

This is a specialist role in our Network Development team, with a mix of power systems analysis, generation connections, transmission planning and working with Transpower.

What does the role involve?

A big part of the role will be looking at new generation and distributed energy resources (DERs) and understanding how they will affect the network.

You’ll Be Doing Things Like

  • Carrying out power system studies, including steady-state, dynamic and transient stability studies.
  • Using EMT and RMS modelling to assess the impact of new generation and DERs.
  • Providing technical input into generation connection applications.
  • Helping get generation projects through the connection and commissioning process.
  • Working with our planning and delivery teams to make sure network development is coordinated.
  • Keeping up with changes to the Electricity Industry Participation Code and making sure we respond to those changes.
  • Looking at what the network will need in the future as demand and generation changes.

The other part of the role is our relationship with Transpower. You’ll work closely with them on our bulk electricity supply requirements and future transmission needs.

You’ll help us understand where the National Grid has capacity and where the constraints are and what future changes to the grid could mean for Powerco. You’ll also act as a key point of contact between Powerco and Transpower, coordinating requests and work such as Access & Occupation approvals.

What are we looking for?

You’ll have an engineering degree and at least five years’ experience in the electricity industry, with a strong background in power systems or network planning.

The Important Stuff For Us Is

  • Experience with power system analysis.
  • Experience with both steady-state and dynamic analysis.
  • A good understanding of the electricity industry, including relevant standards and legislation.

You’ll ideally have experience with some of the modelling tools we use, including PSCAD, PSS SINCAL, PSS NETOMAC, PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory or RTDS.

Programming skills in Python, VBA or C++ would be useful, but aren’t essential.

You’ll also need to be good at working with people. You’ll be dealing with engineers and planners across Powerco, as well as Transpower, customers, consultants and other industry organisations. Being able to explain technical information clearly and work through problems with others is just as important as the technical side of the role.

A Bit About The Team

You’ll be part of our Network Development team, working with people across Powerco to plan and develop the electricity network.

It’s a role where you’ll get to work on some interesting technical problems, but also see how your work translates into real projects and connections on the network.

If you’re a power systems engineer who enjoys the technical side of the work but also likes working with people and getting things moving, we’d be keen to hear from you.

Applications close: Sunday 4th October 2026

Our ability to get the best out of people is what sets Powerco apart. We realise that candidates – especially from underrepresented and neurodiverse backgrounds – often won’t apply for roles unless they meet ALL the criteria.
