The Welfare and Self-Reliance (WSR) Department is seeking to appoint a Humanitarian Specialist. This permanent full-time position is based at the Pacific Area Office in Auckland, New Zealand. Reporting to the Area Humanitarian Manager, the successful candidate will help create, develop, and evaluate humanitarian relief and development programs that strengthen self-reliance, relieve suffering, and support the Church's mission across countries within the Pacific Area.

Responsibilities

As a Humanitarian Specialist, you will design, implement, and evaluate humanitarian relief, resilience, and community development programs that strengthen self-reliance and improve the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. Working across multiple countries and cultures, you will provide technical expertise, training, coaching, and strategic support to field managers, area managers, country directors, and local partners, helping to strengthen disaster preparedness and response, welfare assistance, livelihoods, and community development initiatives. You will collaborate with government agencies, community leaders, faith-based and non-governmental organizations, and other key stakeholders to ensure programs are effective, accountable, and responsive to local needs, while contributing to needs assessments, planning, monitoring, evaluation, continuous improvement, and capacity-building efforts that promote sustainable humanitarian outcomes, resilience, and long-term self-reliance.

Qualifications

  • 8 years of equivalent combinations of relevant experience, university education, and professional certifications will be considered
  • Strong understanding of the principles and guidelines of welfare and self-reliance services and humanitarian standards and the ability to apply them to the 5-year humanitarian plan and address and resolve complicated humanitarian challenges
  • Intuitive ability to establish relationships of trust with mid-level and some senior Church, organization, and community leaders and represent the Welfare and Self-Reliance Department with professionalism and integrity
  • Excellent problem-solving, listening, change management, and negotiation skills, including strong written and verbal communication skills and English language proficiency
  • Ability to learn systems and processes quickly and be proficient using personal computers to utilize databases, spreadsheets, word processing, internet, text, and e-mail communications
  • Demonstrated experience training employees, volunteers, and other staff on-site and remotely, individually or in groups
  • Church leadership and administration experience and a strong understanding of the influence of cultures and practices in the area
  • Must be able to work collaboratively and travel up to 40% of the time
  • Proof of Legal Right to Work in New Zealand
