The opportunity - Te tūranga

The Platform Engineering Lead reporting to the Head of Engineering & AI, is responsible for the reliability, resilience, security, and operational excellence of TVNZ's digital platforms, ensuring seamless content delivery to millions of New Zealand viewers.

In this role, you will provide hands-on technical leadership, setting strategic directions for platform engineering and DevOps practices while driving a high-performing, accountable, and customer-focused culture.

By balancing operational demands with long-term platform evolution, the Platform Engineering Lead enables teams to deliver at speed without compromising stability, manages critical technology partnerships, and champions modern platform engineering capabilities that support TVNZ's digital ambitions.

What we're looking for - Tā mātou e kimi nei

To be successful in this role we are looking for the following

· Strong experience in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), DevOps, Platform Engineering, or related disciplines, including significant experience at Senior Engineer, Technical Lead, or equivalent level.

· Demonstrated success leading and embedding SRE and Platform Engineering practices, including operational ownership, on-call management, service reliability frameworks, incident response, and continuous improvement.

· Strong hands-on expertise with AWS cloud services, including EKS, Lambda, CloudFront, SQS, EventBridge, API Gateway, and core networking and security services.

· Expert-level experience in observability and monitoring, with deep knowledge of New Relic and AWS CloudWatch, including the design and implementation of Service Level Objectives (SLOs), dashboards, alerting strategies, and operational metrics.

· Proven track record leading major incident management processes from detection and triage through to root cause analysis, remediation, and preventative action.

· Experience managing strategic technology vendor relationships, including driving accountability for service delivery, enforcing SLAs, negotiating technical outcomes, and challenging change proposals where required.

· Strong change management capability, with experience governing, reviewing, and approving production changes within high-availability, customer-facing platforms.

· Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and modern delivery practices, including AWS CDK, Terraform and/or CloudFormation, alongside CI/CD pipeline implementation and management.

· Experience with AWS Media Services, including MediaLive, MediaPackage, MediaTailor, and CloudFront for video delivery, or experience working within OTT and streaming platform environments.

· Knowledge of Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies, including Widevine, FairPlay, and PlayReady, and their application to secure content delivery.

· Understanding of video streaming technologies and performance optimisation, including HLS, DASH, SSAI, ABR, and CMAF.

· Experience working within media, broadcast, streaming, or other large-scale, high-concurrency consumer digital platforms.
