Bio

Mickey Smith (US/NZ) is a conceptual artist living in New Zealand. As a photographer, her practice has been engaged with a longstanding inquiry into libraries, books and archives — in particular the social significance of their physical existence or disappearance.

Mickey holds a BA in Photography an is an active member of the NFT fine art photography community - she has served as an Obscura mentor and contributor, First Generation Foundry Artist, LA billboard artist, is a member of the RAW DAO, and served as a curator for the NFTPhotographer.xyz platform. Her open studio channel is hosted on the Assembly discord.

Mickey is represented by Sanderson Contemporary in New Zealand and CLAMP in New York.

For two decades, I have photographed books in libraries. They aren’t touched, artificially lit or manipulated. Bound by a librarian, found in the stacks, they are documented as left by the last reader. In libraries worldwide, these volumes are being deaccessioned, making them a rarity in the physical world.

Included in my NFT Genesis collection,

Library of Obsolescence, are seven iconic magazine titles of the 20th century, creating an assembly of cultural archives lost. Each NFT is part of a triptych of the same title, and collectively all three create a set that will be brought together and disbursed along the blockchain, referencing their movement in the physical world. The Library of Obsolescence presents a shift in cultural values; the spines are mantras of particular moments in our history and take on new meaning as repositories for the future.

On Foundation,

Volume is a collection rare titles, each journal photographed as found on the library shelf — books judged entirely by their covers. Slipping the library to the blockchain, this collection was curated with a playful hat tip to the NFT space in mind — reflecting on the pace, politics and people within our community.

The TIME & AGAIN collection explores the passage of time, grief and preservation of memory through the visual metaphor of the library. This collection was one of the first photography commissions created for the blockchain, commissioned by Obscura.io as part of their Season One Foundry Commission in 2021/2022.
