Mō te Tūranga | About the role
As an AI Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, building, deploying, and operationalising machine learning and AI solutions that create real value for ASB and our customers. Working within our AI Practice, you'll help transform innovative data science concepts into scalable, production-ready solutions while ensuring the highest standards of reliability, security, and responsible AI.
You'll collaborate with Data Scientists, Engineers, Software Specialists, and business stakeholders to deliver end-to-end AI capabilities. From feature engineering and model deployment through to monitoring and lifecycle management, you'll help build robust AI systems that support decision-making and enhance customer experiences across the bank.
What you will do
- Design, develop, and deploy AI and machine learning models that are robust, scalable, fault-tolerant, and production-ready
- Build and enhance feature stores and feature tables that support machine learning models
- Deploy AI solutions using modern MLOps practices, including model monitoring and lifecycle management
- Work across innovative in-house and external AI platforms, tools, and technologies
- Collaborate closely with Data Scientists, Engineers, and Software Specialists to deliver integrated end-to-end solutions
- Champion the use of AI, data science, and emerging technologies to solve complex business challenges
- Partner with business stakeholders to build understanding and ensure the safe and responsible use of AI solutions
- Promote Responsible AI practices, including fairness, transparency, privacy, security, and human accountability
- Contribute to technical standards, best practices, and governance frameworks within the AI Practice
- Foster a culture of continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and technical craftsmanship across the team

You're passionate about AI and machine learning and enjoy turning complex concepts into practical, business-focused solutions. You bring strong technical foundations, curiosity for emerging technologies, and a collaborative mindset that enables you to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
You enjoy solving challenging problems, communicating technical concepts in a way others can understand, and continuously developing your expertise in a rapidly evolving field. Most importantly, you care about building AI solutions responsibly and ensuring they deliver positive outcomes for customers and colleagues alike.
What you bring
- Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related discipline
- Experience working with machine learning model development, deployment, monitoring, and lifecycle management
- Understanding of AI, machine learning, statistical modelling, supervised and unsupervised learning, regression, classification, and generative AI techniques
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, Databricks, AWS, or similar AI/ML environments
- Proficiency in Python, R, or other commonly used AI engineering and data science languages
- Strong SQL skills and experience working with large datasets
- Experience using notebook environments such as Jupyter Notebook or Databricks
- Knowledge of Data Lakes, Feature Stores, Cloud Data Warehouses, and modern ETL/ELT tooling
- Exposure to REST APIs and integration patterns
- Experience with prompt engineering, generative AI frameworks, and emerging AI tooling
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to a range of stakeholders
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in complex environments
- A growth mindset with a passion for learning and staying current with evolving technologies
