Mō te Tūranga | About the role

As a Senior AI Engineer, you will be a technical leader responsible for architecting, building, and scaling production-grade AI and machine learning solutions that drive measurable business outcomes for ASB and our customers. You will set technical direction, mentor junior engineers, and ensure our AI systems are robust, scalable, secure, and responsibly designed.

This is a high-impact role at the heart of ASB's AI transformation. You will lead complex initiatives spanning machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and generative AI — working at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and real-world customer value. You will partner closely with Lead AI Engineers, data scientists, platform teams, and senior business stakeholders to shape ASB's AI strategy and delivery.

What you will do

  • Lead the end-to-end design, development, and deployment of production-grade ML/AI systems at scale
  • Architect robust, scalable, and maintainable ML pipelines and infrastructure, setting best practices for the team
  • Make key technical decisions on model architecture, frameworks, tooling, and infrastructure
  • Drive the adoption of advanced MLOps practices including CI/CD for ML, automated model retraining, monitoring, and drift detection
  • Optimise model performance, latency, cost, and reliability for production workloads
  • Work closely with product owners, business stakeholders, and domain experts to define AI use cases, success metrics, and delivery roadmaps
  • Lead technical discussions, design reviews, and architecture forums
  • Mentor and coach Associate and intermediate AI Engineers, fostering a culture of learning, excellence, and innovation

Ō Pūkenga | About you

You are an experienced AI/ML practitioner who combines deep technical expertise with strong engineering discipline and business acumen. You have a track record of delivering complex AI solutions into production and are passionate about building systems that are not only technically excellent but also responsible, scalable, and impactful.

You lead by example — writing high-quality code, making sound architectural decisions, and elevating those around you. You're comfortable navigating ambiguity, influencing without authority, and communicating complex technical concepts to diverse audiences. You stay at the forefront of AI advancements and are energised by the opportunity to apply them in meaningful ways.

What you bring

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, AI/Machine Learning, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field
  • Postgraduate qualifications or specialised AI/ML certifications are highly regarded
  • 5–8+ years of relevant experience in AI/ML engineering, with a significant portion delivering production ML systems
  • Proven experience deploying and maintaining ML models at scale in enterprise environments
  • Experience working in regulated industries (banking, finance, insurance, healthcare) is highly regarded
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical initiatives and mentoring junior team members
  • Strong communication skills — ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Proven ability to influence technical direction and drive consensus across teams
  • Growth mindset with a commitment to continuous learning and improvement
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to navigate ambiguity
  • Collaborative approach with a focus on team success over individual achievement
